Is This Normal? Menopause and Heart Palpitations Aren’t Just in Your Head

Wellness

As a menopause health coach, I often hear women ask, “Why does my heart race during menopause?” This blog explores the link between menopause and heart palpitations, why they happen, and how to support your body through them. If your heart feels like it’s skipping beats, this post is for you.

Heart palpitations during menopause can feel like your heart is flip-flopping, racing, or pounding out of nowhere. They’re often dismissed or misdiagnosed, leaving women feeling anxious and confused. But there’s a reason your heart is acting up, and it starts with your hormones.

Why Does My Heart Race During Menopause?

Estrogen plays a key role in regulating cardiovascular system. As levels drop during perimenopause and menopause, your autonomic nervous system can become more sensitive. This means your heart may respond more dramatically to stress, caffeine, alcohol, or even changes in temperature.

The result? Sudden heart palpitations that feel like a drumroll inside your chest.

Common Triggers of Menopause-Related Heart Palpitations

  • Hormonal fluctuations (especially estrogen and progesterone)
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Caffeine or alcohol
  • Hot flashes or night sweats
  • Low magnesium or electrolyte imbalance

These palpitations are usually harmless, but they can feel scary, especially if they come with dizziness, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort. Always check with your healthcare provider to rule out underlying conditions, but know that many women experience this as part of the menopausal transition.

What Helps?

Supporting your nervous system and cardiovascular health can make a big difference. Here are a few strategies I share with my clients:

  • Eat magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, legumes, avocados, and fatty fish. You’ll find plenty of these inside my hormone-friendly recipe collection. It’s designed to nourish your hormones, nervous system, and your taste buds.
  • Breathwork and grounding rituals that help settle your heart calm and your vagus nerve. I’m also sharing my free guest pass to Calm so you can explore guided sessions that help settle your system and support your body gently.
  • Hydration and electrolyte balance
  • Tracking triggers to identify patterns (like wine or spicy food)
  • Gentle movement like walking or restorative yoga

Menopause and Heart Palpitations: The Emotional Layer

It’s not just physical. Palpitations often show up during moments of emotional intensity – when you’re speaking up, setting boundaries, or navigating change. They can feel like your body is sounding an alarm, even when your mind is calm.

For many ladies, this symptom carries more than discomfort. It brings fear, frustration, and a sense of being misunderstood. You might wonder if it’s anxiety, if it’s serious, or if anyone else feels this way. The truth is, your heart is responding to a complex mix of hormonal shifts, nervous system sensitivity, and emotional processing.

This is why I always encourage women to look at palpitations through a holistic lens. What’s happening in your body is deeply connected to what’s happening in your life.
