Hey there!

What does grit mean in midlife?

Let’s be real: midlife doesn’t come with a rulebook.

What worked in your 30s might not cut it now, BUT that doesn’t mean giving up. It means showing up differently.

Midlife grit is about staying consistent and committed to what truly matters, even when life shifts.

Let’s take a lesson from an unexpected place…

What West Point Cadets Can Teach Us About Grit

It’s not just a buzzword or a motivational poster quote… It’s a powerful mindset shift, and one that becomes especially important as we navigate our 40s, 50s, and beyond.

Surprisingly, we can learn a lot about grit from West Point cadets. They go through an intense summer initiation called Beast Barracks, which includes six brutal weeks designed to test their physical, mental, and emotional limits. Despite the fact that these young men and women already completed a grueling application process (including a nomination from a member of Congress!), about 3% of them still end up quitting.

It’s not strength, smarts, or stamina.

It’s grit: the ability to stay passionate and committed to your long-term goals, even when things get hard.

And for women over 40? That exact same quality can be the difference between giving up on yourself… and finally stepping into a season of growth, energy, and alignment.

The Grit Study That Sparked It All

Psychologists curious about what predicted success at West Point developed a simple scale to measure grit and found that the cadets who scored just one standard deviation higher were 60% more likely to finish Beast Barracks than their peers.

They weren’t necessarily stronger. Just more resilient.

The same grit scale has since predicted outcomes in Ivy League GPAs, Spelling Bee champions, and beyond.

In other words: it’s not always the most talented people who succeed. It’s the ones who stick with it.

What Grit Means in Midlife

If you’ve ever wondered what grit really means in midlife, here’s the TRUTH:

It’s not about powering through. It’s about staying committed to what matters, even when your body, your priorities, or your energy levels start to shift.

Because this season comes with curveballs:

  • Your body changes
  • Your energy dips
  • You’re juggling aging parents, evolving relationships, and a whole new relationship with yourself

In your 20s, success might have looked like pushing through and outworking everyone. But now? Success looks like staying committed to your well-being, your peace, and your priorities – even when the results take time.

Take this mindset shift.

Less pressure to “do it perfectly.” More patience to keep showing up.

3 Ways to Practice Grit in Midlife

Want to strengthen your grit muscle? Try this:

1. Recommit to YOUR goals

Forget what you “should” want. What do you actually want for your health, happiness, or life right now? Grit comes easier when the goal is meaningful to you, not just socially acceptable.

2. Start small, and stay with it

Tiny consistent actions build more momentum than big unsustainable bursts. Grit isn’t about pushing through at all costs, it’s about choosing to keep going even when it’s not glamorous.

3. Celebrate consistency, not just outcomes

Midlife progress isn’t linear. Celebrate showing up, even when results aren’t immediate. That’s the real win.

You Can Build This Muscle

Here’s the best part: grit isn’t something you’re born with, it’s something you grow.

You’ve already done hard things. You’ve already weathered seasons that tested your patience, your strength, and your heart.

This season is no different. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Ready to build momentum with support?

If your energy’s dipped, your metabolism feels sluggish, or you’re ready to shift into a new season of health without obsessing over food or numbers…

The Metabolism Jumpstart might be your perfect first step.

It’s a 4-week program designed for busy women in midlife who want to feel better, balance their hormones, and reconnect with their bodies (without crash diets or calorie counting).

The best part: you can choose from the self-guided or join the wait-list for the 4-week group:
